It is not uncommon for an artists record sales to skyrocket afther their death. In the pat year record sales for Amy Winehouse, and Etta James rose exponentially the week after they died.
But there apparently one other thing that will send a song flying up the record charts and off the shelves – or downloaded - …and that is to have your song, or any portion thereof, sung by one of the most powerful men in the free world.
On January 19 United States President Barack Obama participated in a fund raising event at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. While at the podium the President sang a’ cappella a couple of lines from the Al Green hit “let’s Stay Together”. After the “performance” Green’s hit song had an increase in sales of 490 percent.
Obama told Green, who was in the crowd, “I cannot sing like you, but I just wanted to show my appreciation.” The President added that his people didn’t believe he would do it.
